Opis:
"The only preserved Viking Ship to have been excavated in Sweden can now be viewed at Göteborg City Museum, Sweden. The ship is on display as part of the Museum’s exhibition ‘Vikings – between Woden and Christ’.
In mid September 1933 at Äskekärr, about 30 km from Göteborg upstream the river Göta, archaeologists began excavate what later was found to be a Viking ship. The ship was brought the same month to Göteborg Museum for conservartion treatment. The ship is made of oak and clinker-built. The type of ship is a merchantship denominated “knarr”. A dendrochronological analysis indicated that different parts of the ship could be dated between 8th and 11th centuries. C-14 analysis on stuffing used between the boards indicates a date at AD 845-940.
In 1933 the Äskekärr Viking ship was recorded through photos and drawings in connection with the excavation. From 1933 to 1995 the ship has been kept in storage except for shorter periods of conservation treatments.
In 1947 the conservator at the National Museum of Maritime History, made a thorough documentation including a model suggesting a reconstruction of the ship. In 1977 new measurements were made when new conservation treatment were initiated. These recordings resulted in a new reconstruction proposal.
In 1986 discussions began concerning the possibilities to exhibit the ship, resulting in renewed conservation treatment including documentation, During the preparations for exhibiting the Äskekärr Viking ship, runic inscriptions were found on the mastfoot. To our knowledge this is the Viking age mastfoot in Scandinavia with runic inscriptions. A dendrochronological analysis dates the mastfoot to AD 1050."
